When the World Was Flat

so many ships on the ocean
so many ships on the sea
so many ways to sail over the edge
and they all look the same to me

one captain says to take shelter
one captain says to set sail
one for the mutiny, one for the charge
and one for to land you in jail

storm clouds are dangerous dramas
you can disappear in the squall
but there’s nothing so bad as the calm and the gentle
that’ll sucker you into a fall

so many ships on the ocean
so many ways to decide
so many traps for the unwary fly
in a place the spider to hide

when the world was flat it was easier
the stars spun around
and the sun went up and down
but when the world was flat it was scarier
you could sail off the edge
and you would never be found

when the world was flat it was magic
there were gods everywhere
they were holding up the air
but when the world was flat it could be tragic
if the gods got mad
they took everything you had

the scout up above in the crows nest
the sight of the long distance eye
the course is set by the sexton
in pursuit of the echo’s reply

there’s land on the distant horizon
there’s hope for the future to be
but there’s so many ways to sail into it
which one is gonna be
